Is a sore throat the same as a throat infection? What types of throat infections are there? How do I know I have one? Is it preventable? Are there natural ways to treat the symptoms of a throat infection?

Two Main Types of Throat Infection – Bacterial and Viral

A sore throat is a symptom of a throat infection or an irritation of the pharynx—the back portion of the mouth behind the tongue. The irritation may be a local throat infection or a post-nasal drip from sinusitis, allergies or a cold.

The majority of throat infections are viral in nature and often referred to as viral pharyngitis. Approximately 10-15% of sore throats are bacterial infections, caused by either streptococcus (strep throat) or staphylococcus bacteria. Bacterial infections are often treated with doctor-prescribed antibiotics, rest, and self-treatment. Without a throat culture, it can be difficult to determine whether a throat infection is viral or bacterial.

Symptoms of a Viral Throat Infection vs. a Bacterial Throat Infection

A viral throat infection may develop gradually. It is often accompanied by the flu or a cold, with the associated symptoms of those conditions. If a fever is present, it will generally be in the range of 101 degrees F or below.

A bacterial throat infection is typically accompanied by swollen and tender lymph nodes in the neck. Fever is typically 102 degrees F or higher. The throat may appear extremely red and have either white or yellow spots at the back.

Thrush – Yeast Infection in the Throat

Another type of throat infection is commonly called thrush. This overgrowth of yeast—candida albicans—that is normally found in the mouth can result from an overuse of antiseptic mouthwash. Symptoms of thrush include white spots of the tongue and mouth; however, they can be difficult to see when the throat is very red.

Fungal infections of the throat can occur when the immune system is depressed, after taking an antibiotic, or using a steroid inhaler for asthma or COPD.

Treatment for Sore Throat or Throat Infection

Traditional home remedies for throat infections include lozenges, gargling with salt water and drinking tea or hot water. However, there is a safe patented new remedy that you need to know about—one that not only soothes a sore throat, breaks up congestion and reduces irritated membranes and swollen glands; it kills the bacteria or viruses that are the underlying problem. This remedy is called Guardian Silver Sol.

Rinse your mouth or gargle 1 ounce of Guardian Silver Sol for 6 minutes, then swallow small amounts every 30 seconds until gone. This can be repeated up to 4 times a day. Reduced symptoms may be experienced after the first treatment.
